THE GIFT OF GRANDCHILDREN
365 DAYS OF THANKSLIVING — DAY 19

365 days ago today, my wife and I were blessed to hold our grandson for the very first time. The memory of that wonderful day popped up on my Facebook page this morning. Honestly, just looking at the picture of Danielle cradling Bishop put tears in my eye. That grin from ear-to-ear — a picture is worth a thousand words, isn’t it!
I know I’ve said this before (perhaps not in this forum, but); grandchildren are a gift from the Lord. Let’s be honest, every person born on this planet is a gift from the Lord. Each child, every person, has been given a soul; and each of those souls has the potential to bless this world.
Sadly, the sins of the world destroy many of those souls—dimming the light within some, and extinguishing it in others altogether. As Jesus said, woe to those who hinder any of these from believing in Christ (Matthew 18:6). Jesus saw each child as a gift from above. Spot on, Jesus! He was absolutely right.
The realization of that notion solidified in my soul when I became a dad. Becoming a father is one of the greatest blessings I’ve ever had. Beholding your children as they come into this world—no word can express the joy and love that abounds in the singularity of that moment. And then, to raise them for years-on-end through the good days, the rough ones, and all the celebrations in between. And Uffdah if those days don’t fly right on by. Before we know it, they’re grown, married, and carrying on the legacy themselves by gifting the world with children of their own.
Children are a gift, yes and yes. But the gift God gives to your children, in children of their own, now that’s a gift to behold. Last Christmas Eve, I asked my daughter if I could hold my grandson during the children’s message. She gladly obliged. I was so proud to introduce Bishop to the congregation. On that Christmas, holding my grandson was the best gift I’d ever been given (apart from Christ Jesus, that is).

Today, that Facebook memory reminded me how thankful I am to have been given the title: Grandpa. About being a grandparent, King Solomon once said
“Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers.”
Proverbs 17:6, ESV
Amen to that!
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of grandchildren. Through each of them, you’ve blessed the world. In them, we can see the best of us, and they’re a reminder of your love for humanity. Bless each grandchild born on this day, and bless all the grandparents that get to hold them for the very first time.
