QUIET LADY

365 Days of Thanksliving — Day 238

Today’s blog might as well start with a single word: TO, or perhaps more affectionately: DEAR. Like an affectionate letter or memorandum, today I’d like to address a dear, quiet lady in my church.

Dear Quiet Lady, I want to thank you for your encouragement this day. You may not have even known you gave it; yet with your silent and still posture, with gaze affixed, you encouraged me with only your presence. No word was spoken; no word exchanged; just a mere look, and uplifting came.

To you today I have good reason to thank the Lord, and to the Lord I say, “Thank you for the encouragement you rendered through the presence of a dear friend.”

Perhaps you’re wondering who this quiet lady is. If you’re a member of the Lord’s congregation in which I serve, you might even be going around the sanctuary trying to ascertain that very thing. Surely, I tell you, I will not give up the ship. What’s important is not that you know who she is, but that she exists.

My friend has many who are just like her—those who silently whisper encouragement in our ears. She has sisters and brothers who enhearten, who smile, who serve. To all these dear ladies and dear gents, I say, “Thank you, I see you.”

“I see you.” Three simple words strung together, the sum of their individual parts meaning so much more. In James Cameron’s Avatar, there exists a people called the Na’vi. The Na’vi saw beyond seeing; they saw into the heart. Like the Na’vi: “I see you, dear quiet lady.”

Surely, there is a singular “Quiet Lady” to whom this post is dedicated. And while that is 1000% true, I cannot lie: in reality, there were a few ladies and gent who today whispered encouraging words, who smiled, and whose genuine, peaceful presence was like a gift from the Lord—gifts they didn’t even know they gave.

I know this post is different, but today I am thankful for my friend, who, without knowing it, encouraged me while I preached. For her and all those who are like her, I thank the Lord this day.
