LANGUAGES OF THE SOUL

365 DAYS OF THANKSLIVING — DAY 2

languages of the soul

I've often heard it said that mathematics is the language of the universe.  There’s probably truth to that. In that same way, there exists a language to the soul — perhaps more than one. For unlike the universe, which may be monoglot; I contend our souls are multilingual. Of those many languages, one of them profoundly spoke to my soul today.

I mentioned it before, and I’m not ashamed to say it again. Sundays are my favorite day; in part because we gather together to worship the Lord, but also because we worship with those we love. I haven’t always been able to say this, but this congregation has become family. Today, my church family expressed their love in such a tender way.

Lutherans aren’t always the best when it comes to “Pastor Appreciation Month.” Honestly, that’s okay. But good golly, they sure do know how to pour it on and bless at Christmas time. THIS congregation excels in that department.

Out of the blue, our women’s ministry blessed my family and I with a generous gift; and they weren’t the only ones. Four times this morning alone, we were presented with gifts, simply out of gratitude and love. None of them needed to express their love in the ways they did; but that generosity and gratitude they showed – that’s pure love; and to me, it’s JUST WOW!

Love—it’s gotta be the primary language of the soul. For love, God created the heavens and the earth and created human beings to be in relationship with Him. And for love, God gave His One and Only Son, so that whoever believes in Him shall inherit eternal life (John 3:16) and marinate in his love for all time.

It’s been written that God’s “love language” is obedience. But when it comes to the language of love, God is its creator, for the Holy Scriptures tell us

"God is love."

1 John 4:8, ESV

It’s no surprise then that when we love others, it’s because God first loved us and wove his language into our hearts. That love was on full display this morning in a supercharged way!

I thank God for His love, and I also thank New Hope for the love of God that they’ve poured back into me. New Hope: you really know how to fill one’s cup!

I could continue writing today about the many languages that speak to our souls, but for today, I think I’m going to close with this. For love, you have loved me, not because I first loved you, but because God first loved us all. Your love is a language, and it truly speaks to my heart. Thank you, New Hope; and that you all!
