BAH-DA, BAH-DA-DA, DA

365 DAYS OF THANKSLIVING — DAY 15

BAH-DA, BAH-DA-DA, DA

For giggles, play along with me. Do any you remember that game show, “Name That Tune?” (If you do, by the way, that means you’re an old fart like me, hahaha). Take a guess which lyrics began this song: “Bah-da, bah-da-da, da… (Repeat twice; then a few times more as backing vocals beneath the mains).

Bueller?... Bueller?... Bueller?

God love John and Michelle Phillips, Denny Doherty, and Mama Cass (aka The Mamas & the Papas). By golly their music was groovy, and like choirs of angels, they sure could harmonize. And this morning, on this Monday morning of all days, I awoke with their smash hit “Monday, Monday” spinning like an old 45 through my brain.

Okay… now if that weren’t enough ‘Monday’ music whirling around my noggin, then the Bangles “Manic Monday” also started playing like a 1986 mix tape. Why, of course, I had NO idea. But there they were, ready to be sung on this Monday of Mondays.

For me anyway, Mondays are usually the furthest from being manic. On Monday- Monday, I arrived quite content-like at the office, settled in, and fired up the desktop. With fans spinning, I opened Spotify and typed “Monday” in my songs list. Those two songs rose to the top. BEGIN PLAY.

I can’t speak for you, but for me, music is another languages that speaks to my soul. Yesterday, I wrote how love is the soul’s primary language. But as I contend, I think our souls are multilingual. Music might not be the soul’s primary language, but it’s gotta be up there at the top. It lifts our souls and causes our spirits to arise toward the Lord.

We hear often in the Bible of choirs of angels and myriads of saints singing to God—worshipping the Lord of Hosts. Music is a language found within heaven above; on the surface of the earth;, and even in the oceans below. Just consider, even creatures like whales have songs; and the earth, it’s said, vibrates and resonates. The earth itself sings its songs. That’s something, isn’t it?

The Psalmist wrote:

“Oh come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.”

Psalm 94:22, ESV

I’ve never done an extensive search of the Bible, but I had to Google how often music is referenced in the Holy Scriptures. According to Google search, there’s over 400 instances to singing in the bible, with over 1,000 total mentions to music. Holy Moly!

I thank the Lord for creating us with the desire to sing, design instruments, and to make music together. I thank the Lord for the many of you who can sing with the gift of angelic voices. I thank the Lord for musicians of all kinds; and I thank the Lord for all the genres of music throughout the world.

In all my years, I cannot think of a day when I haven’t played or performed music in one form or another. It’s part of my being; and for many of us, I believe it’s because God designed us that way. The Lord made as worshipful beings—to praise, to sing, to harmonize in order to honor the Lord and his created order.

So… take a moment to sing a song to the Lord. Perhaps you’ll “Turn up the Radio” with Autograph and sing along. Perhaps you’ll grab your horn and make the room resonate with a concerto from the likes of Bach, Handel, or Mozart. Or maybe, like me, you’ll dust off that old 45 of “Monday, Monday” and sing along with the late, great Mama Cass. Whatever you do, sing it LOUD to the Lord, and make a joyful noise this day. Amen?
